"Behind Closed Doors" educational film

This DVD and work pack is for teachers, to enable young people to develop skills to deal with family conflict – the cause of homelessness for 75 per cent of the young people Alone in London works with.

It also provides young people with information on where to turn to for support if they find themselves in danger of becoming homeless.

Young people who have been involved in Alone in London’s work have participated in all aspects of making the DVD including script writing, filming, editing and starring in the film itself.

Chloe Harewood, 25 years old, found herself at severe risk of becoming homeless after getting into serious rent arrears when she was 22 years old. “I was really scared of becoming homeless and Alone in London helped me understand my legal rights and sort out my rent arrears. Alone in London’s family mediation team also helped me regain contact with my sister who I had lost contact with. Having experienced family conflict and been at risk of homelessness myself, I think the DVD and work pack is great. It’s really important that school students are aware of the risks of homelessness. We all have personal problems and it’s important to talk about them with others and to know that there is support out there.”

The teacher-friendly DVD and work pack fits in with the national curriculum and can be used in PHSE and Citizenship lessons.

As well as mediation and advice work, Alone in London runs a homelessness prevention programme in secondary schools in London. The programme consists of workshops and discussion sessions with young people aged 11 – 16 as part of their PHSE lessons. Run by a specialist schools worker from Alone in London, the sessions cover issues including bullying, isolation and family conflict. The DVD and work pack will allow teachers to run these sessions independently.
