Schools work project
This project is aimed at young people aged between 11 and 18 years. We can help you look at conflict issues you might have that are affecting your home and/or school life.

Aims of the project are to:
- Prevent family breakdown and youth homelessness
- Provide crisis intervention
- Allow young people to be listened to
- Ensure that long-term support is available.
“If these prevention talks happened when I was at school, while I was having problems, I am sure I wouldn’t have become another homeless statistic.” Iola 18
We can help you to:
- Facilitate a difficult conversation
- Give you time to talk about a difficult family situation
- Offer support and listen to you
- Help prevent you leaving home suddenly without considering your options first
- Talk to you confidentially (unless you or someone else is at risk of harm).
“It really helped me and taught me how to solve my problems” Amina - Year 10 student
As well as reducing family conflict, the Schools Work Project and Mediation Service can help to:
- Reduce conflict between home and school
- Assist a pupil’s personal development
- Improve classroom dynamics
- Raise school attendance and attainment levels.
Objectives of the schools work project for young people is to:
- Give a greater insight into the realities of leaving home and the need to do so in a planned way and where possible with the support of their families.
- Motivate them to resolve their conflicts within the family, and so remain at home.
- Teach young people essential interpersonal and life skills (in areas of listening, communication, negotiating and problem solving)
- Give them the opportunity to discuss issues that are relevant to them and to learn from their peers, providing them with the opening to discuss issues that they might not be able to do in other situations.
The schools work project also carries out Family Mediation for young people in school and their families. This has been very popular amongst young people in the schools and offers the opportunity for self referrals to be made at the end of the class.
Modules include:
- What is homelessness?
- Family Conflict
- Conflict resolution & communication skills
- Bullying
- Confidence and self esteem
